How to create and maintain your own website
Many people on the internet allege that it is easy to create your very own website but in reality it is not as easy as it sounds. I'll take you step by step through the entire process of creating and maintaining your website.
1. Naming your website
The first thing that you'll have to do on your path to creating your website is that you'll have to decide a name for your website. You'll need to think of what it will be called. Your website will be of the form http://yyyy.com where yyyy is the part that you need to decide. When doing this I suggest brainstorming a bunch of ideas as the one you decide on might actually already be taken. Also pay special attention to keeping it short and sweet so others can easily remember it.
2. Getting the domain
Once you have chosen your domain name go to this site. If you haven't already clicked on the link go ahead and do that it will open in a different window.
Once you have reached the site go to the box at the top of the site and type in your first choice of a website name, or in other words just the 'yyyy' part of the http://yyyy.com. Then click the go button.
Once you have done this you should get one of two messages: either the domain is already taken or that the domain is available. If the domain is available move on to the next step in the process. If it has already been taken try some similar names till you get a website name that you like.
3. Buying the domain
Okay, contrary to what you think domains aren't all that expensive and especially the website that I showed you is the lowest priced domain registrar. It charges upto 70% less than its competitors. But you need to be careful not to waste any money. Just check the box that says .com and none of the other ones. Then click on the button at the bottom that says proceed to checkout.
Once of reach the following pack you'll have to either select the standard package or the deluxe package. I would recommend the deluxe package because you wouldn't have to worry about your website's visitors going to the wrong place, not to mention the immense amount of money you will be saving by picking that option. Now you see why I told you to check only one of the boxes. Just like this I'll try to save you money at every step of the way.
The following page will tell you to create a new godaddy account. Go ahead and do that. Once you are done creating a godaddy account, It will ask for a form of payment go ahead and make it. Once you are done with this process you'll finally get a page that tells you what your username, password, and order number etc. are. Carefully note them down on notepad and save it, you'll need this file again. They'll also send this information to the e-mail you put in while creating an account but this is a precautionary step.
4. Understanding web hosting:
Now that you have a domain or name for your website registered you'll need to find a place to host to keep your website. The buying and registering of a domain was so that when your website's visitors type in a name they are directed to the place where your site is otherwise your site would look like an ip address such as 702.13.362.88.
5. Hosting your website:
To host your website I've once again searched the web and found a place where you get the most value for the least money. So go the hosting website here.
Once you are at this website ignore all the supplementary information and click on the button that says web hosting. Once you are at the web hosting page pick either the baby plan, or the swamp plan because they allow you the option of setting up multiple websites. Both these plans are recommended. Pick whichever of the two plans fits your requirement more. Go ahead, and select one of the two plans and click the order now button.
Now the next screen that you'll see will give you the option of registering a domain or using an existing one. Pick the option of using an existing domain. When you select the radio button that says choose an existing domain you will be given a box in which you would have to put in the name of the domain that you just got from the previous website. You will be asked to create an account. Go ahead and do that.
Once you have created an account on this website, you'll get your login username, password etc. This should also be in your mail but put it in a notepad document and save it in case you don't get it.
6. Combining the two:
Login to your hosting account and find out what are your assigned nameservers. Then login to your domain registrar website and click on the my domain names link under the domains menu. Once you are there in all domains select your domain and click on the nameserver button. Once you are there click on the custom nameserver tab and put in your nameservers in the nameserver 1 and 2 number respectively.
7. Finding Design software:
The easiest way to create your website is through wysiwyg (what you see is what you get) html editors. It is just like creating a word document except that you end up designing a real website. All the coding is done in the background by the program itself. I've found one of these wysiwyg editors for you and guess what it's absolutely free, once again here's the website for it: Free Website Builder
You will find tutorials and resources such as images on the website itself.
8. Putting it all together:
Once you are done designing your website all you have to do is upload them to your hosting account that you got earlier. You can do this by using cpanel which you should be able to find within your hosting account itself. All you have to do is browse for your files and then upload them. Remember to name your homepage index.html and have links from there to the other pages of your website.
Then when you type in your domain name of the form http://yyyy.com you should be taken directly to the index.html page of your website.
At this point you should be done with creating your very own website without having to fiddle with anything technical. If you have any doubts regarding any part of the process don't hesitate to dispatch a mail to
